ICELAND POPPIES

A MOST APRECIATED DECORATION. —- The blooms of Iceland poppies are more appreciated than those of any other flower for winter decoration. To have plants in flower in winter, it is necessary they should have a long season of growth. This necessitates sowing the seed now. The tiny young plants pass through a brief critical stage, during which many will succumb. Cool conditions, shade from bright sun and careful watering are the principal points to keep- in mind in the earily stages. In the view of the writer, it is a wise plan to sow pinches of seed at intervals. If one batch fails, the others will provide enough plants, and the efforts will be well repaid. A porous surface, a dusting with finelypowdered lime and no deprivation of fresh air are essentials to successful germination.
