CHESS

NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIP. EXCELLENT CONTESTS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WANGANUI, December 28. The fourth round of the New Zealand chess championship was played today, some excellent contests resulting. The fifth round will be played tomorrow, sixth and seventh .rounds on Friday and the eighth round on Saturday night. All adjourned games, except that between Jones and Dyer, were disposed of today. Results of the fourth round are:— J. D. Heenan (Hastings) v J. A. Erskine (Invercargill): Heenan resigned at the seventeenth move. W. J. Fairburn (Wellington) v D. Lynch (Hastings): Lynch resigned at move 30.

D. I. Jones (Auckland) v J. B. Dunlop Dunedin: Jones resigned at move 25. C. J. Taylor (Auckland) v E. J. Dyer (Wellington): In the initial stages Taylor cramped Dyer’s position, but in the middle game Dyer recovered lost ground and Tayloor was a pawn down at the adjournment. E. H/ Severne (Wellington) v V. G. Cole (Nelson): The game was adjourned, Severne having a slight advantage with a pawn to the good. H. McNabb (Nelson) v E. Rutherfurd (Stratford): At the adjournment the positions were even. R. O. Scott (Wanganui) v F. K. Kelling (Wellington): Queen’s gambit declined. At the adjournment both forces were even.

The following adjourned games were completed:— First round —Erskine v Taylor: A draw was agreed to after a long, hardfought game. Kelling v Jones: Kelling won at move 67 after a strenuous struggle. McNabb v Scott: McNabb lost because of being adverse to giving up an exchange.

Second round. —Severne v Erskine: A draw was agreed to at move 41. Lynch v Dyer: Dyer had the advantage of three pawns and won.

Third Round. —Scott beat Erskine after an hour’s hard struggle. Rutherfurd drew with Heenan. Kelling beat Severne after queening a pawn, resignation coming at move 68.

At the end of the fourth round the leading positions in the premier reserve tourney were: —Wade (Wellington), 4 wins; Christensen (Palmerston North). 3 wins. 1 draw; Cromarty (Wanganui), 2 wins. 2 draws; Beach, 2 wins, 2 draws.
