HOUSEHOLD HINTS
Chintz can be dry-cleaned at home by rubbing in with a piece of flannel equal quantities of bran, powdered chalk, and salt. To stop hiccough, take a tablespoonful of peppermint water. This remedy is quick, safe, and simple. Use a small wire tea?strainer when lifting eggs out'of a saucepan of boiling water. Remove perspiration-marks from silk by soaking the affected parts for a few minutes in a mixture of ammonia and methylated spirit. When making buttonholes on boys’ trousers, hold a length of fine twine round the hole and buttonhole over this. Cross the ends at the end of the hole and stitch securely. The buttonholes will outlast the garment. Excellent waterproof covers for behch or garden cushions can be made out of an old mackintosh. Cut into squares, and close the hems with rubber solution. If there is no help handy when moving a heavy piece of furniture, folq a thick duster under the end to be dragged, and the linoleum will not be scratched. An excellent bed-table can be had if required at short notice by using the ironing-board. The stand goes under the bed, and the board goes over the bed. Covered with a pretty tray-cloth) it makes a good substitute for the real thing. Old shoes that are hard and uncomfortable can be softened by using a little vaseline upon them. Just rub it on with a cloth and leave overnight. Then rub away the vaseline.
