CARTERTON
♦ STARTLING EXPERIENCE FOR RIDER. HORSE FALLS DOWN DEAD. ("Times-Age" Special.) A rather startling experience befel Mr J. Wells, of Greytown, yesterday afternoon. He was riding a horse and when near Mr Dan Jensen’s residence at the north end of the borough he felt the horse swaying with him and give a lurch. He made himself prepared for emergencies and when the animal fell he threw himself clear, thereby obviating the likelihood of the horse falling upon him. There was no movement in the animal after it had fallen and it must have died instantly. Mr Wells is of the opinion that the horse had been suffering from inward bleeding and that the cause of death was lockjaw. The unfortunate part of the affair is that the horse did not belong to Mr Wells. He had secured the loan of it to journey to Carterton. Personal. Mrs C. Cumpsty, of Pipiwai, Whangarei, a daughter of the late Mrs McLaren, was present at her - mother’s funeral yesterday. Her name was omitted from the obituary notice appearing on Tuesday. Mrs W. Mathewson and Hugh Mathewson (great nephews). Many beautiful floral wreaths covered the casket. Pantry Evening. A delightful pantry evening was given to Miss Lorna Harris at the residence of Mrs R.
