ICE CREAM
SUPPLY TO SCHOOL CHILDREN SUGGESTION FAVOURED. “I personally think it would be a very good idea, seeing »we can’t get milk,” said Mr W. R. Nicol, chairman of the Wairarapa Milk Committee, referring this morning to a suggestion recently made by Mr T. A. Russell, Borough Sanitary Inspector, that ice cream should be supplied to the school children. Mr Nicol said he strongly favoured the proposal, and he intended to discuss it with Mr J. Robertson, member for Masterton. Mi' Nicol said it would cost about £3OOO to supply milk to the schools under the proper conditions. and it might be possible to supply ice cream much more cheaply. It was a matter of costs and supply. Ice cream, besides having a greater food value, was much more sanitary to handle and would probably not need such an expensive plant. The conveyance of milk was another big problem, and it was likely that ice cream could be dealt with much more easily. There v/ere, he said, 1500 children in the urban area of Masterton alone, so it could be seen that the proposal was quite a big one. Mr Nicol considered, however, that the supply of ice cream should be tried out, as an experiment, which might be done through the school committees.
