Nearly 2,000 officers and notables of the Czarist court pledged their loyalty to the Grand Duke Vladimir, as “Czar of all the Russias.” Former generals, who are now taxidrivers, and former countesses, who are now domestic servants and saleswomen, cheered the Duke’s declaration: “We must return to our own country.” The Duke, interviewed, denied plans to accept the Ukrainian throne under Herr Hitler’s dominion.
