The Hon F. Jones, Minister of Defence returned to Wellington from the South Island today. The Hon F. 'Langstone, Minister of Lands, will return to Wellington today from the King Country. ’ Mr G. Vanston, president of the. Baseball Umpires’ Association of New Zealand, will be staying with Mr McPhail, Dixon Street, Masterton, from the Christmas holidays. Sir James Grose has been appointed director of Imperial Chemical Industries of Australian and New Zealand, Ltd., to fill the vacancy on the board caused by the death of Sir Harold Beauchamp.
The Hon P. Fraser, Minister of Health, left Wellington for* Hamilton .by the Limited express last night. The Minister, who will open today additions made to the Waikato Hospital, expects to return to Wellington tomorrow.
Advice of the death of Professor P. G. Hornell on October 27 in the Stockholm has been received in Wellington. Professor Hornell was engaged by the New Zealand Government to report on the Arapuni hydro-electric scheme, and means of dealing with its troubles, and while he was in New Zealand he inspected the Waitaki and Waikaremoana schemes.
The Rev Father T. Heffernan, S.M., formerly of the Marist Mission staff and more recently parish priest in charge of St Mary of the Angels’ Church, Boulcott Street, 'Wellington, has been appointed parish priest at St Mary’s, Manchester Street, Christchurch. He will succeed the Very Rev Dr V. Geaney, who has been appointed Provincial of the Marist Order in New Zealand, with headquarters in Wellington. Father Heffernan will take up his new duties on New Year’s Day. The death occurred in Auckland yesterday of Mr Wilfred Selwyn Weir Averill, Hastings, third son of Archbishop, Averill, Primate of New Zealand, and Mrs Averill, says a Special Service message from Hastings. He was one of the most popular members of the legal profession in Hawke’s Bay. Born in England in 1900 Mr Averill came to New Zealand as an infant. He received his early education in Auckland and continued his schooling at Christ’s College, Chrstchurch. He went to Hawke’s Bay about 15 years ago. He entered into partnership with Mr Cecil Duff, who died about 18 months ago. Mr Averill was prominently associated with social welfare work, particularly the Red Cross.
