MEMORIAL GATES

PROPOSAL FOR SHOWGROUNDS. A. & P. ASSOCIATION TO MEET COUNTY COUNCIL. A proposal to erect centennial memorial gates to the Solway Showgrounds came up for discussion at last night’s meeting of the Masterton A. & P. Association following on receipt of a letter from the Masterton County Council stating that it was in favour of the project. The president, Mr P. R. Welch, said that as a district centennial memorial proposal had fallen through it was considered it would be a good idea if memorial gates could be erected at the High Street entrance to the Solway Showgrounds. Mr P. M. Compton said they had been talking about these gates for a long time. He had tried to get them for the Jubilee, and he considered they should form a committee to go into the project. He considered the whole of the general committee should give the matter its attention. A committee of this association could meet a committee of the Masterton County Council, and definite proposals could be formulated for consideration at a later date. He strongly supported the proposal. Messrs P. M. Compton, W. James, D, A. Pickering, L. Meredith and H. Bennett were appointed to wait on the Masterton County Council and discuss the proposal with its members.
