FEATHERSTON
DEATH OF MR J. ADAMSON. (“Times-Age” Special.) The death occurred on. Wednesday at I Wellington of Mr James Adamson, at the age of 69, who was a well known ex-resident of Featherston. For many years he was manager of the Featherston Cheese Factory, and retiring from that position became a garage keeper. Later he was proprietor of the Royal Hotel. Some years ago he retired. He lived in Featherston for some time and then went to Otaki. He was a keen bowler, having been president of the Featherston Club on several occasions. He had also been a member’ of the Borough Council. He leaves a widow and three children—Mrs Doris Me Arley (Patea), Mrs Ruby Moore (Martinborough) and Mr Percy Adamson (Wellington). Parents’ Day at School. A large number of parents attended the primary school yesterday afternoon for “Parents’ Day.” A very interesting programme was arranged, beginning with Std 111 who entertained those present with verse speaking, which was very well done. The next room to be visited was the primers, who gave a bright performance of action songs and recitations. The other standards presented songs and recitations in their respective rooms. The children’s work which was on exhibition was much admired. In the technical room the work from the secondary school was displayed —sewing, handwork, woodwork, bookbinding, etc. Miss Card, President of the Home and School Association, expressed thanks to the staff and congratulated the children on their work during the year. She extended the season’s greetings to the staff and children. Mr Hayes (headmaster) thanked Miss Card for her kind wishes which were heartily reciprocated. He also thanked the Home and School Association for the valuable assistance given. Mr Kenward (secretary) spoke on behalf of Mr Dohnt, the president, who was unable to be present. In speaking of the work of the school he asked that the Shop Day to be held on Friday for the Dental Clinic be remembered.
A demonstration of a duplicator was held later on in the afternoon when the Home and Parents Association and members of the staff and committee were given an interesting explanation of its working. A Surprise Party. A surprise party was tendered by the members of the Social Club to Mr Rendle, of Kahutara, recently, the occasion being his birthday, when he was presented with a pipe. The following contributed to the musical programme: Miss Nancy'Rendle (song), Mr H. Muir (sohg), Mr J. Lloyd (piano solo), Mrs Playle (characteristic dance), and Miss O. Harvey (tap dance). After supper the singing of Auld Lang Syne concluded a happy gathering. Women’s Institute Party.
The Kahutara Hall was the scene of much gaiety on Wednesday evening when the Kahutara Women’s Institute gave a Christmas Party. There were about 90 children present.'They enjoy? ed games until the arrival of Father Christmas who was played in by Piper Stalker. After he had greeted the children Father Christmas distributed presents from a heavily laden Christmas Tree. Georgina Warrington won the prize for musical stops. Mrs Sadler supplied the music for the games. With suppei - the children’s entertainment ended, and the adults then enjoyed dancing until a late hour.
Personal. Miss Esme Card is spending a few days with her sister Mrs McKay in Levin. Mrs Chas Rea returned yesterday from a holiday spent in Auckland. Bowling Match. The Featherston Bowling Club met the Victoria Club, Wellington, at Featherston for the Maidley Goodfellowsbip Shield. The president (Mr J. W. Card) welcomed the Victoria players, and after doing so mentioned that the reason for the late start was that six players, three from each club, had been called on to act as pall-bearers at the funeral of a past-president and life member of the Featherston Club, Mr J. Adamson.
Mr Colin Campbell, president of the Victoria Club," thanked Mr Card for his welcome, and expressed the sorrow of the Victoria Club members at the loss which the Featherston Club had sustained.
The games were then started and a few heads were played until 12.30 p.m. After lun'ch games of 25 heads were played with the' following results, Victoria players being mentioned first in each instance: —Gaudin, Parnell, Wallis, Burridge (s) lost to Lipinski, Ayre, Hyland, O’Neale (s) 17-22. Murphy, Kilgour, Perry, McKenzie (s) Green, Atkins, Fronde, Munro (s) lost to Card, Cundy, Rowles, Rolls (s). 22-29. Green, Atkins, Fronde, Munro (s) drew with Davis, Moriarity, Parker, Bloxam (s) 20 all. McLaren, Robinson, Oates, Keech (s) lost to Jeffrey, McKenzie, Fuge, Smith (s) 19-27. Hughes, Tatham, Hinton, Campbell (s) lost to Smith, Whitehorn, Stumbles, Green (s) 22-24.
A rink with D. Green as skip journeyed from Martinborough to make up the Featherston quota and their help was greatly appreciated.
At the conclusion of the contest, Mr Colin Campbell congratulated the Featherston Club on their win and presented the shield to Mr Card (president). He said that he hoped he would bring it along for the return games to be played at an early date.
Mr Card thanked Mr Campbell and said there had been no real win as they weu just goodfellowship games where scores did not count. The holding of the Shield became more valuable each year owing to the increasing number of names inscribed thereon.
The exchange of cheers brought a very happy occasion to an end.
