The Secretary and Mr E. B. Booth were authorised to meet the Baseball Club. Masterton, to consider the application for the use of Memorial Park. Sharp Earthquake. A very sharp earthquake was felt in Carterton last night about 9.11 o’clock. It was preceded by a loud rumbling noise. No damage is reported. A Pleasant Function. A pleasant function took place at the Carterton District High School yesterday afternoon when the staff entertained members of the School Committee and the children’s ball commit-
tee at afternoon tea. Members of both committees were heartily thanked for the interest they had taken in the affairs of the school and the excellent result attained in the recent school ball.
Presentation to Miss Quinn.
At a suitable part of the programme rendered at the Dalefield School Christmas Tree function, Mr Martin Parker, chairman of the committee, said he had a pleasant duty to perform. It was known to all that Miss Quinn, the relieving teacher, was about to leave and the committee and residents felt they could not let their teacher leave without some recognition of her services. The children attending the school had got on wonderfully well under hei’ tuition, and she had adapted herself in a wonderful manner with the children. The committee were sorry indeed to lose her services, and hoped she would get on as well in her new sphere as she had at Dalefield. He asked Miss Quinn to accept on behalf of the parents, the committee and children a slight gift as a token of their respect. “For She’s a Jolly Good Fellow’’ was then lustily sung, and the recipient thanked Mr Parker for his kindly remarks and all for their present. Before the presentation was made lovely bouquets were presented to Miss McDonald and Miss Quinn, respectively, by Joy Ticehurst and Lola Parker, respectively.
Christmas Tree Festival. Dalefield was en fete last evening when the Dalefield School Committee held a Christmas Tree festival for the children. There was a very large attendance of parents and friends and the function was generally considered to have been the best of its kind yet held in the district, reflecting great praise upon the chairman of the school, his committeemen, the headteacher (Miss McDonald) and her assistant (Miss Quinn), who has been relieving during the absence of Miss Dorgern. The first part of the evening was taken up with three well performed concert items by the school children, which showed the teachers had spared no pains in bringing the children to a high state of efficiency. The items rendered were: “Jingle Bells” given in excellent stvle by the primer classes to Standard 2; “I Don’t Want to Play in Your Yard,” six primer school girls gave this item and it was a pleasure to watch the action that was put into the various parts of the song by the little ones; “Nigger Minstrels” (Standards 111 to VI), was well rendered and showed splendid training. All the items were deservedly encored. When the concert programme had concluded the hall was thrown into darkness except one light over a heav-ily-laden Christmas tree. Father Christmas made his way through the front door of the hall greeting the children on his way to the tree. Then he proceeded to distribute the presents from the tree to every child in the room and even to many adults to the great excxitement of the children. This done Father Christmas extended to the children and adults the season’s greetings. Ice cream in abundance and cordial drinks were given to the children. It was a happy Christmas for them. Supper in abundance, provided by the parents was partaken of. The chairman of the committee, Mi’ Martin Parker, then proceeded to distribute the prizes won by the children, among which were the calf club awards and the challenge cup presented by Messrs Borthwick and Sons, for the champion calf of the combined groups, which, he said, was won by the Dalefield School for the first occasion. This was an hon our to be proud of. With the cup went a miniature which was presented to Keith Parker, and the prizes given by the P. and A. Society for the garden plots. Proficiency awards were made to Keith Parker, Russell Sayer, Ray Knowles, Kenneth Jamieson and Phyllis Knowles. The hall was then cleared and dancing was indulged in until midnight when the happy event was brought to a close, Mrs Rogers and Miss Quinn played the accompaniments for the items and Mrs V. J. Ashton and others played the dance music. Garden Plots Prizes. Besides the prizes awarded by the Wairarapa P. and A. Society for best plots in the school gardens at Dalefield, Miss Quinn, the retiring teacher, also donated prizes which . were won bv Ray Knowles, G. Callister, Keith Parker, W. Rogers, and Roy Atkins.
Mr Alex Ordish, a Dalefield resident, judged the plots.
