ARMAMENTS IN ITALY
HEAVY ADDITIONAL OUTLAY IN VIEW OF GENERAL SITUATION. AMENDED BUDGET FIGURES. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received This Day, 9.35 a.m.) LONDON, December 14. The British United Press Rome correspondent says a Cabinet communique states that, owing to the urgent necessity for further developing and strengthening armaments, in view of the general situation, the total expenditure on armaments for the year begining on July 1, 1939, will be £92,000,000, in addition to £19,250,000 already earmarked for defence, which is being reserved for later necessities. The army will receive £37,845,000 the Navy £30,040,000 and the Air Force £24,115,000. Appropriations for public works, the mercantile marine and communications are also increased.
The total Budget expenditure will be £325,745,000. The estimated revenue is £273,000,000. The current year’s expenditure on armaments is £64,430,000
GAS .MASKS.
PROVISION BY EMPLOYERS ORDERED. ■
(Independent Cable Service.) (Received This Day, 9.30 a.m.) ROME, December 14. The Government has ordered landlords, industrialists and professional men to provide gas masks for their staff before December 31. The decision is surprising as gas masks in the past practically were not available outside the Army.
