MAJOR PROBLEM
HOSPITAL ACCOMMODATION AT GREYTOWN
WAITING LIST OF PATIENTS.
BIG OUTLAY IN PROSPECT.
‘Something will have to be done soon to provide increased patients’ accommodation at the Greytown Hospital,” said Mr J. F. Thompson at today’s meeting of the Wairarapa Hospital Board. “I do not want to stampede the board into doing anything rash,” he added, “but the position is serious. The old people’s home is also crowded. There has been a hospital waiting list for months.” The chairman, Mr H. H. Mawley, said he realised that there was a major problem at Grey town but, in view of the changes in prospect at the Masterton Hospital and the Social Security Act the matter should be deferred for a few months. Tnere was only one remedy for the position at Greytown and it would be an expensive one. Increased accommodation at Greytown could not be provided under £50,00. It would mean a new Nurses’ Home and a new operating theatre. When the time arrived he felt they should push ahead rapidly with a building scheme at Greytown. That time had not yet arrived and even if it had the money was not available.
Mr Thompson: “It looks like your money or your life.” ■lt was decided that the question of providing increased accommodation at Masterton and Greytown be deferred until after the new Medical Superintendent was appointed and had investigated the position.
