COCKER MEMORIAL
TEMPERANCE COMPETITION ESSAY LIST OF PRIZES AWARDED. . WORK DONE COMMENDED BY JUDGES. Under the terms of a small bequest from the late Rev James Cocker, one time Methodist minister o'f Masterton, an amount of yearly interest is set aside by the Public Trustee, to provide prizes in a competition among secondary and older primary scholars in the district. The competition is along temperance lines, practically as advocated in the Education Department’s syllabus of training, and is divided into two grades, senior (15 — 18 years) and junior (12—14). The competition was held a few weeks ago and evoked considerable enthusiasm among the scholars in the grades concerned, there being altogether 104 competitors. The judges were Miss O. R. Sutherland, M.A., Mr G. W. Morice, M.A., and Mr J. H. Conly, M.A. In their report the judges state, inter alia: “That the competition was carried out under examination conditions, supervised in the several colleges and schools and the Principals and Staffs are to be thanked for their co-opera-tion. Owing to the prevalence of measles and colds. at the time of the competition, entries were probably lessened. The examiners further wish to state that the work of the leading competitors was very good indeed and. that it was difficult to separate the first three essays.” The list of prizes awarded is as follows:—
Senior grade—First prize (15s), Donnell Bennett, Solway College; second prize (equal), 7s 6d each, June Hislop and Dorothy Nowell, Solway College.
