NGAUMU ROAD
MAGNIFICENT GORGE SCENERY.
Not many Wairarapa residents are aware that on the Ngaumu Road, eastward of Brancepeth, there is a magnificent stretch of wild gorge scenery that will bear comparison with anything of its kind to be seen in other parts of New Zealand. The road crosses the stream, which flows between clifflike banks, almost 140 feet above the water and looking downstream from the bridge, the beech trees growing on the procipitous banks are dwarfed to the size of shrubs. Both banks are clothed in native bush, in which there is. a good representation of many varieties of trees and shrubs. The road takes a sharp turn to the bridge, which is hidden from view, approaching from Masterton, until it is almost reached and the suddenness with which this gorge scene is encountered leaves a lasting impression on the visitor. It is of interest to note that following on slips caused by earthquakes, it was found necessary recently to shift the bridge to new foundations. This precarious undertaking was successfully accomplished without mishap of any kind.
