BRUCE’S LAGOON

EVIDENCE OF 1855 QUAKE.

LITTLE-KNOWN BEAUTY SPOT.

Within a few miles of Masterton there is impressive evidence of the force of the - 1855 earthquake, an upheaval that lifted portions of Wellington Harbour and Palliser Bay as much as nine feet. Near Kopuaranga, almost at the end of a small range of hills that border'the eastern bank of the Ruamahanga River, the hill was split in twain and a huge slip crashed down on to the Ruamahanga, the waters of which, it is stated, were blocked for three days before they broke round the obstruction. The landslide left a deep cavity, the base of which is occupied by a small lake, now known as Bruce’s Lagoon. It is a picturesque locality, a grbwth of native trees adding beauty to the surroundings. As it is on private property, however, ana is some distance from road access, it is a little known beauty spot, which provides, at the same time, an object lesson of the mighty forces of Nature.
