The official view is that signature of the Memel Convention of 1924 does not place an obligation on England and France to defend the present state. It is claimed that these Powers can only be committed by a definite act of aggression by other signatories. Italy and Japan have shown no interest in ihe recent developments. GERMANY’S POLICY. A REPEATED ASSURANCE. (Received This Day, 1.10 p.mi) BERLIN, December 12. A propaganda official, commenting on Mr Chamberlain’s House of Commons reply, said Germany had repeatedly declared that she would respect the Memel Statute.
