LAST OF THE LANDAUS
CURIOSITY IN HOBART. Hobart possesses probably the last landau for public hire, in the world. This form of transport, familiar in Hobart for nearly a century, has rapidly disappeared in the last few years because of the inroads of motoi traffic, and the decision of a Hobart family named Broughton to replace their public landaus with taxi-cabs reduces the number of landaus available for public hire to one. They have always attracted the attention of visitors to Hobart, who have enjoyed the novelty of riding in them. The Broughton family has been associated with them for 95 years in Hobart. The grandfather of the present generation initiated the business in 1843, and he and a son were instrumental in introducing them to the city of Auckland. The landaus enjoyed great vogue for many years, and were prominent in the Royal procession when King George V and Queen Mary, as Duke and Duchess of York, arrived at Hobart in 1901. In their heydays nearly 100 landaus plied for hire in Hobart
