CENTRAL SCHOOL

PUPILS ENTERTAIN TEACHERS. ENJOYABLE SOCIAL EVENING. A very jolly evening was spent in the Central School Assembly Hall last night when the pupils of Std 6 (rooms 7 and 8) expressed their gratitude to their teachers by entertaining them and the other-members of the staff at a social evening. “On with the dance, let joy be unconfined” quite expressed the spirit of the evening. The whole evening was arranged by the pupils, who besides providing a well-thought-out programme of concert items and dancing also provided a very tempting and bounteous supper which was done full justice to. During the evening the teachers of Std 6, Miss L. M. Cocker and Mr Ward, were presented with tokens of esteem by their pupils. The presentation was made to Miss Cocker by Donald Hayes and to Mr Ward by Judy Bannister. Both made speeches of appreciation which were suitably responded to by the teachers concerned.

The Headmaster (Mr E. G. Coddington) was also the recipient of a gift from the Std 6 pupils. This was made by Dorothy Heckler. In his reply Mr Coddington deplored the yearly exodus of pupils they had become attached to. Though the pupils might at times doubt that liking for them he assured them that it did really exist. Like a good gardener he had to watch their growth and development and sometimes to take steps that would prevent their characters from becoming warped. He was proud of the past achievements of old Central pupils, who always stood high among the pupils of the College. He wanted them to become good secondary pupils and, above all, good, straight, honest citizens of whom the town and the country would be proud. The programme for the evening was as follows: —Recitation, D. Heckler; dance (operatic), V. Price; song, Ruth Kuhtz; pianoforte solo, E. Brogden; mouth organ solo, W. Geary; song, Ngawa Stevenson; recitation, D. Heckler; song, Helen Bannister; recitation, M. Bennett; song (humorous), L. Fulton; play, “Father Christmas Comes to Supper,” John Hancock, Helen Gaskin, Gwennyth Morice; Helen Bannister, Campbell Smith, Don Hayes. A dance programme followed, the M.C. being Guy Wagg. Mr E. C. Coddington played the music for the dances.
