BUFFALO HERDS
RESTRICTION OF NUMBERS NECESSARY. EDMONSON. With a view to restricting the size of the herds of buffalo, or bison, on Canadian Government game sanctuaries in the Prairie Provinces and the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, approximately 2,000 of these animals will be slaughtered this year. More than one million pounds of choice buffalo meat, will be offered for sale on Canadian markets, while the hides will be made available for the manufacture of rugs, coats, and robes. In danger of extinction sixty years ago, the Canadian bison was saved to posterity by the action of the Canadian Government in placing a few of the beasts in a game sanctuary in northern Saskatchewan. This original small herd of buffalo has mulitplied so that steps have to be taken every year to keep them restricted to the grazing capacity of the parks.
