CARTERTON
PHYSICAL WELFARE ACT. FORMATION OF DISTRICT COMMITTEE. ("Times-Age” Special.) A meeting held in the Council Chambers on Tuesday with a view to setting up a district committee under the provisions of the Physical Welfare and Regulation Act, 1937, was attended by Mrs R. S. Mclnnes, a member, and Mr W. A. Jameson, Secretary of the National Council of Sport. After Mr Jameson and Mrs Mclnnes had outlined the procedure to be adopted, the following were proposed as members of the District Committee: Representing the Wairarapa South County, Messrs A. Fisher (Clareville), A. Reid (Carrington), D. McGregor (Gladstone), and one lady to be nominated by the County. The Carterton Borough will be represented by the Mayor (Mr D. L. Taverner), Councillors E. McKenzie, O. W. Wolters and Jas. Steel. Mr P. A. Cole was appointed secretary. ‘ Mr Forsett is to be approached regarding the nomination of a representative from the Carterton District High School. Fire Brigade. A meeting of the Carterton Fire Brigade was held in the Fire Station last evening, Superintendent R. P. Wakelin presiding. Further arrangements were made regarding the Christmas Tree Party for children of members of the Fire Brigade, to be held at the fire station on Saturday, December 17. Bowling. Further games in the club competitions have been played as under: — Colts singles: A. Thompson beat C. W. Gaze, 23/13. Handicap singles: Foster and Smith (s) beat Newbould and Hughan (s), 24/16; Budd and Williams (s) beat Beaven and Sorensen (s), 24/17. Fire Precautions.
The Carterton Borough ■ Council is having the long grass in all the side streets of the borough mowed down with a horse mower. With the approach of -warm dry weather, there is always a danger of fire and to obviate the risk the grass is being cut.
SCHOOL GARDENS.
RESULTS OF SHOW COMPETITION.
The school garden exhibits run under the jurisdiction'of the Wairarapa P. and A. Society have recently been judged by Mr L. Robinson, who reports as follows: — Best school garden in South Wairarapa: Clareville, 85 points, *l' Gladstone, 82 points, 2; Dalefield, 73 points,
3. Best individual vegetable plot at each school: — Gladstone: Rangi Reiri and William Taylor, 1; Gus Cave and Sam Reiri, 2; Peggy Hautana and Queenie Namana, 3. Clareville: Geo. Nichols and Roger Reid, 1; Trevas Abbott and Brian Banks, 2; William Hennop and Trevor Hall, 3. Dalefield: Roger Sayer and Jack Jamieson, 1; Keith Parker and Ken Jamieson, 2; Ray Knowles and Gordon Callister, 3. Best individual flower plot (girls only):—Gladstone: Helen Walker and Netta Kari, 1; Peggy Hautana, 2; Effie Hadfield, 3. Clareville: Verna Humphries and Molly James, 1; Gloria Kempton and Coral Bisnop, 2; Nola Humphries and Leslie Vennell, 3. Champion individual plot in above classes:—Flower plot, Clareville, Verna Humphries and Molly James, 1. Considering the amount of sickness during the year, Mr Robinson said he was very pleased with all the garden plots. They were a credit to both teacher and pupils alike.
