SUDDEN SILENCE

IN THE ITALIAN PRESS ON SUBJECT OF DEMANDS FROM FRANCE. CAMPAIGN APPARENTLY CALLED OFF. (Received This Day, 1.50 p.m.) ROME, December 6. Tub-thumping, articles about Italy’s territorial claims have disappeared from the newspapers. Perhaps it was felt that their continuation would be too bold a challenge to Lord Perth's message to Count Ciano. The only echo of the anti-French campaign is messages from Berlin showing that Germany supports the claims. There are also messages from Tunis and Ajaccio describing attacks on Italians. It is hoped that the new tone means that Italy realises that her tactics might wreck the Chamberlain visit. FRANCE AROUSED ITALIAN CLAIMS KEENLY RESENTED. RESOLUTION BY COLONIES COMMISSION. (Received This Day, 1.50 p.m.) PARIS, December 6. The Colonies Commission of the Chamber of Deputies passed unanimously a resolution protesting against the Italian claims threatening the integrity of the French colonial empire and also asking that foreign propaganda should not be tolerated.

It was decided that a delegation should wait on M. Daladier to ascertain what measures' were proposed to protect North Africa. The commission addressed a message to the Tunisians assuring them that France would not permit interference with the liberty of peoples under the Tricolour. A 8.8. C. broadcast in Italian, German and French during a news session states: “As a sequel to the demonstrations in the Italian Chamber, there has been a virtual unanimity in the British Press and of public opinion in support of the French protest against tne agitation in Italy on behalf of the cession’ of Tunis, Nice and Corsica. , ,
