CANADA’S WHEAT

HIGHER PROTEIN CONTENT. WINNIPEG. Canada’s 1938 wheat crop shows an average protein content considerably higher than in 1937. The Grain Research Laboratory of the Board ol Grain Commissioners of Canada report the protein content, the index of baking quality, of No. 1 Northern wheat to be as high as last year, while that of Nos. 2,3, and 4 Northern were definitely higher. Special grades are higher in protein content than last year but Garnet was lower. One of the features of this year’s Canadian wheat crop was the extensive production of Thatcher rust resisting wheat in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. This new wheat, recently developed by laboratory officials to offset the ravages of rust was made available to farmers this year for the first time. Production of Thatcher wheat this year amounted to from 50,000,000 to 60,000,000 bushels. It is calculated that from this quantity there will be sufficient high grade seed available for the seeding needs of the two provinces next year.
