OBITUARY
MR J. A. McGRATH

The death occurred last evening of a former superintendent of police, Mr J. A. McGrath, in his 81st year. Mr McGrath was a native of Wexford, Ireland. He came to New Zealand in 1877 and took up service in the Armed Constabulary, and was one of the few survivors of the force which took part in the raid on Parihaka in 1882. He transferred from the Armed Constabulary to the Detective Department. Mr McGrath was promoted to the position of superintendent at Dunedin in 1919. and filled that position until his retirement in 1922.
