STAFFS REDUCED
IN CHRISTCHURCH CLOTHING FACTORIES SERIOUS DECLINE IN ORDERS REPORTED. UNDER PRESSURE OF IMPORT COMPETITION. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The staffs of several clothing factories in Christchurch have been severely reduced owing, it is stated, to a serious falling-cff in orders, brought about by overseas competition. , One company which operates at capacity with a staff of sixty-five has reduced this number to twenty-five, and the remaining available work has been rationed. The manager of one company said that an importing firm had purchased end of season’s lines in Britain. These were placed on the market in New Zealand in competition with garments made in local factories. Because of the seasonal lag between Britain and New Zealand, importers were able to purchase many lines at exceedingly low prices. The position, he said, was serious, and there was a danger that some of the smaller firms would be forced to close down.
