Mr W. C. Pottinger, of Thorndon, has been appointed headmaster at the Kahutara School. Mr P. Borthwick, Masterton, lef Wellington for the south by the steamex- express last night. Mr A. D. Crookenden, Masterton has received notice of his appointmen! as engineering draughtsman in the Government Housing Department. He will take up his duties early in January.
Mr and Mrs A. Bennett, of Wellington, arc visitors to Masterton. Some vears ago Mr Bennett was on the staff of the Masterton Post Office and previous to his recent retirement on superannuation was engaged in carrying out the duties of an inspector. Mi- Walter Hickson, headmaster’ of the Newtown School, Wellington, since 1932, is to retire at the end of the year after a long period of service in schools in England in New Zealand. After 2j years’ service in large schools in Manchester, England, Mr Hickson in 1920 came io New Zealand and was appointed first assistant at the Point Chevalier School under the control ol the Auckland Education Board. In February, 1926, he went to the Wellington district as head teacher at Tokomaru. Later he became headmaster of the Martinborough District High School, and in May, 1928, was appointed headmaster at Masterton West, on July 1, 1932, he was appointed to the Newtown School as headmaster, a position he has held ever since. Mr and Mrs Hickson are to be entertained by the Newtown School Committee at a farewell social evening on December 12 and, on December 14. members of the Wellington Education Board will say good bye to Mr Hickson at morning tea. After his retirement Mr Hickson will live in Auckland.
