OPOSSUMS NUMEROUS
DAMAGE TO MASTERTON ' GARDENS.
It is not generally known that opossums are quite numerous In Masterton. Several gardeners in the Lansdowne area and at least one almost in the heart of the town have had their roses seriously damaged by opossums, which appear to have a special liking for the buds. One resident in the centre of the town has seen seven of these animals in his garden. It is stated that a year or two ago. a trapper operating in a fringe of native bush was rewarded by a catch of one hundred opossums. Occasionally a dead opossum may be seen lying on the roadway, where it has been struck down by a passing car. Opossums are a source of trouble to the Wairarapa Power Board and only the other day it was suspected that they were the cause of a powei’ failure in the Carterton district.
