SWIMMING BATHS. NOW OPEN FOR USE. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Carterton swimming baths were thrown open to swimmers on Saturday afternoon and were well patronised. As a result of a thorough cleaning of the bath this year before water from the high pressure service was turned into them, conditions are very good this season and the swimming public , will greatly appreciate the efforts' of •> the Borough Baths Committee. All the appointments have been thoroughly overhauled, and successful season is looked forward to. Children are very enthusiastic over the baths. TENNIS. B GRADE BUTTONS. On Saturday afternoon a challenge game was played for the Wairarapa B grade buttons. The contestants were lan Bond and J. Brown (holders) of the Carterton Club and W. Sewell and Gordon 1 Udy (challengers), of the Carrington Park Club. The holders were too good for their opponents and won the match 6/2, 6/0. GUN CLUB COMPETITIONS. MASTERTONIAN SUCCESSFUL. There were nineteen shooters present on the club’s ground on Saturday, besides many interested onlookers. Two competitions were fired and some excellent shooting was witnessed. In the early part of the afternoon a tricky wind was blowing. This, however, did not materially interfere with the shooting. Mr J. McKnight handled the “clays” from the trap and had a pretty strenuous afternoon. The first competition was for a trophy donated by the Colonial Ammunition Company, of Auckland, and in conjunction with this event a sweepstake was also fired. C. E. Grey (Masterton), shooting from the 19 yards mark, killed the whole of his birds. He was closely followed by A. Teal. Carterton (14 yards), 17 birds; G. Bretherton, Taumarunui (20 yards), 16 birds; F. Taplin, Carterton (19 yards), 15 birds; J. Udy, Carterton (16 yards), 15 birds. The second competition was for a trophy presented by Mr M. Kiddie, of the Carterton Club, to be fired for by novice shooters only (15 birds). A sweepstake was fired in conjunction with the trophy. The trophy was won by Randal Williams (14 yards), who had fifteen breaks; J. Udy (16 yards), who also had 15 breaks divided the sweepstake with Williams; L. Rayner (14 yards), 14 breaks, and C. E. Grey (21 yards), 13 breaks. CARTERTON BOWLING CLUB. The second round in the champion rink games was played on Saturday, the result of which brought all teams on a level again, each having a win and a' loss to their, credit. A dainty afternoon tea Was provided by Mesdames:G; arid W.'Hart arid' presided over by Mrs G. Hart and Miss McLean. Club, championship: —Singles: Aplin beat Beaven, 17/14. Thompson and Larsen (s), by default. Croquet Matches. A very pleasant afternoon was spent by members of the Carterton Club on the croquet lawn on Saturday. During the afternoon matches were played for the Parton Brooches, the holders, Mesdames King and Gayfer losing them to Mesdames King and Bath. A cake guessing competition was won by Miss E. Gregor, of Greytown. Inquest on H. E. A. Whiteman. An inquest was held on Saturday afternoon in the Court House, Carterton, before the District Coroner, Mr E. G. Eton, into the death of Halford Ernest Arthur Whiteman. 36 years of age, a married man, with a wife and two children. Deceased was a sharemilker, employed by Mr N. S. Cadwallader of Waihakiki, and had been missing from his home on Friday night. On Saturday morning he was found hanging from a willow tree overhanging the Waiohine , river at the rear of his residence. Evidence showed that deceased had been in bad health for some time. He had latterly been subjected to fits and had become depressed as a consequence. The Coroner’s verdict was to the effect that the cause of death was from hanging, while deceased was in a depressed state of mind. Junior Cricket. The Carterton junior cricketers gained an eight-point victory over Masterton juniors in a match played on Carrington Park, Carterton, on Saturday. Carterton batted solidly and made 203 before being disposed of. Masterton could do little against the trundling of Ewing and Berry, and were all out for 80 runs in their first innings. In the follow on Ewing again showed his metal with the ball and captured 5 wickets for 32. The second innings of the visitors totalled 68. Carterton thus won by an innings and 55 runs. Labour Party /Social.

The dance and euchre tournament conducted by the Carterton Labour Party social committee and held in the band hall on Saturday evening was well attended. The music was supplied by Messrs S. Te Tau and C. Hewison. An extra was played by Mr J. Sewell on the piano accordion. The Monte Carlo dance was won by Mr R, O’Keef and Joyce Benge. Mr Teddy Te Tau and Miss Madge Green gave an exhibition of the “Lambeth Walk,” which was loudly applauded. Mr. S. Green, senr, and Mr R. O’Keef, capably carried out the duties of M.’sC.

The prizes in the card tournament were won as follow: —Mrs O’Hallaren, Mrs Hodder, Mrs Parker, and Mr Wally Anderson. The sit down supper arrangements were in the hands of a capable committee, including Mesdames Benge, Anderson, Lenihan and Green, Messrs Lenihan, R. Braggins, L. Hurndell, S. Green and Holland.
