MAURICEVILLE
WOMEN’S DIVISION. (“Tiines-Age” Special.) On Thursday a pleasant function was held at the home of Mrs. H. Trass, when the members of the Women's Division held their monthly meeting. The drawing room was decqrated with bowls of beautiful pink roses. Miss G. Heckler presided over a large attendance. Before the business started members stood in silence as a mark of respect to the memory of the late Mrs. Dawson, mother of Mrs. E. Cheetham. The secretary read the balance sheet in connection with the birthday function held recently. The balance to be divided between the Chinese children, the quota for Flock House and the hospital. Competitions were won as follow: — Best bloom, Mrs. W. Cheetham; best toy, Mrs J. Milner; novelty for Christmas, Mrs. J. Baine. The Wandering Shilling went to Mrs Weston. After a dainty afternon tea was served, Miss G. Heckler took the opportunity to extend the season’s greetings to all members. The next meeting will be held in February at Opaki. A vote of thanks was passed to Mrs Trass for the use of her home. Calf and Fat Lamb Competitions. The calf and fat lamb competition, for which a number of the Mauriceville school children have entered, will be judged at the Solway Showgrounds on Tuesday, December 6. Labour Party Dance. The Mauriceville East Hall was packed on Thursday night, the occasion being a dance held by the local branch of the Labour Party. Mr. and Mrs. J. Robertson and Mr. B. Roberts, M.P., were among the guests. A bouquet was presented to Mrs Robertson by Pauline Ross, and buttonholes to Messrs. Robertson and Roberts byj Aileen Ross and Lois Ross.
Brief speeches were delivered by Messrs. Robertson and Roberts. Cheers were given for them and also for Mr. M. J. Savage (Prime Minister). Messrs G. McWhirter and Ken Ross were the M.C.’s The Monte Carlo was won by Miss Jensen and partner. The dance was one of the largest attended in the district for a long time past, the hall being packed. It was organised on sound lines and was a most enjoyable function, everyone remarking on the orderly manner in which it was conducted and the thorough enjoyment derived by those present. It was an object lesson on how to run a social function. Mr K. Clements (president of the local branch) was the organiser, and he is to be congratulated on the able manner in which he carried out his task. A large number of farmers were present from various parts of the district. The excellent supper provided was greatly appreciated. Dancing continued until the early hours of the morning.
