POWER SUPPLY
ADDITIONAL TRANSMISSION LINE IMPROVEMENT OF WAIRARAPA FACILITIES. “The erection of a new power transmission line between Melling and Masterton. work on which is about to begin, is a very important thing as far as the Wairarapa is concerned,” said Mr H. B. Keenan, engineer of the Wairarapa Power Board this morning, “as it will give an additional security to the people of the district. If the Waingawa-Woodville line goes out we will have an additional supply from the Melling-Waingawa line. Another important aspect,” he said, “was mat when they had to shut down, they would not have to shut down the whole district once this new line is in operation.” The Wairarapa Board, he added, haa been fighting to get this work done for some time and the Government were to be complimented on getting it under way so quickly. At present the board had four sources of supply, with only one overhead line and this had always been a weak link in the system. When the new line was erected two lines would be provided. Work is to begin almost immediately on the erection of the new line, which will complete the loop between the Melling substation, which supplies the Hutt Valley and Waingawa, which supplies the Wairarapa Power Board. Besides providing an additional point of supply to the Wairarapa Power Board in the southern portion of its area it will make available a third transmission line between the power stations at Mangahao and Waikaremoana and the city of Wellington. The work of building the line, which will extend over 38‘ miles, is expected to occupy about 12 months.
