Handicap limit 97. AMATEUR ATHLETICS. ANNUAL REPORT OF EKETAHUNA CLUB. The annual report of the Eketahuna Amateur Athletic Club for the past year states, inter alia: —There was slightly more interest in amateur athletics last year owing to the fillip given to athletics by the presence in the province of Mr Al Fitch, the noted American professional runner and coach. The number of active members of the club was larger than usual but the number of young men in the town and district who take ■ advantage of the facilities offered by the club is still disappointly small. One evening meeting was held at Eketahuna, a large contingent attending from Masterton. The annual, sports meeting, usually held at the end of. February was, owing to clashing of dates, not held until March 19. In the track events there were excellent, entries and good competition resulted. We were fortunate in securing the appearance of Al Fitch at the meeting who gave an exhibition run over 100 yards. In this run Mr Fitch was paced by a horse and official watches credited him with the fastest run 100 yards ever recorded in the Wairarapa. The wrestling section of the sports meeting was highly successful. Mr C. Cooper, of Newman, was again in charge of the wrestling arrangements. Competitors were present from all parts of the province. The club now possesses five cups for the wrestling competitors. These cups have been donated by the following to whom the club is extremely grateful: Messrs George Hansen, H. E. Greathead, Isak Son, Gordon Dick and K. Marenzi. To Mr Cecil Cooper and the members of the Wrestling Club who lent and erected their wrestling ring, the success of the wrestling section is due. Helpful advice and assistance was received from the Wairarapa -Wrestling Association. The horse" events also attracted l&rge entries and provided much appreciated entertainment to spectators. The conduct of the horse events was once again in the capable hands of Messrs J. B. Carruthers and C. Dagg and a band of willing helpers. The Harold Evans Cup for most points in horse events was won outright by Mr Hilton George. As usual we are indebted to the Plunket Society for taking charge of the Baby Show. Owing to clashing of dates the number of sideshow attractions was smaller this year. Turning to the financial result of the year’s working we find cause for concern. Increased prize money and increasing costs in other directions contributed to a substantial deficit. It was necessary to draw on the club’s savings from other years to meet the loss. It becomes increasingly apparent that we must raise our present somewhat small admission charge to our sports meeting. The only alternative to raising the admission charge would be to decrease our prize money, a step which we should hesitate to take. In conclusion we have to thank that ever willing band of workers that year after year gives up very valuable hours of leisure to the preparation of the grounds and the running track. Eketahuna Cricket Team. The following will represent the Eketahuna Cricket Club in a match with Pahiatua at Pahiatua tomorrow: — F. Robinson, R. McGregor, A. Rowden, J. Payne, R. Payne, P. Payne, J. Reid, J. Treadray, R. Mountjoy, D. Howden, G. Higginson. Reserves: J. Tuckett, R. Hornblow. Eketahuna Sale. At the Eketahuna sale yesterday dairy cattle met with a fail- demand considering the fact that the season is well advanced. Pigs were in good demand and easily disposed of at late rates.
