Employers instituted sanctions against strikers, locking out men desirous of resuming work. Arsenal, tramway and factory employees and also metal workers were dismissed and told to apply again. Valenciennes strikers attacked and injured several Belgians crossing the frontier to resume work. At Lille textile workers, after being refused permission to enter the works, stormed the factories, but were later evacuated by the police and MobileGuards. Several Denain strikers were injured by the guards, using rifle butts. PARLIAMENT TO MEET RENAUD ON GOVERNMENT AIMS. NATIONAL RECONCILIATION NECESSARY. (Independent Cable Service.) (Received This Day, 10.55 a.m.) PARIS, December 1. M. Daladier stated that he was summoning Parliament on December 12. An indication of the Government’s policy was given by M. Reynaud in a speech at a luncheon. “The events of yesterday,” he said, “do not signify a social landslide. We want to obtain goodwill and not lifeless resignation. Democracy cannot exist without agreement from the great majority. National reconciliation is necessary for the success of our great enterprise.” The metal workers are still out at Dunkirk and Valenciennes, but the situation throughout France is reported to be almost .normal.
Forty persons arrested at Valenciennes yesterday and six today were sentenced to imprisonment for terms varying from twenty-one to forty-five days.
