STATE THEATRE

. TWO OUTSTANDING STARS IN “BREAKING THE ICE.” ,In “Breaking The Ice,” the State Theatre will tonight present an outstanding picture in which the leading roles are taken by Bobby Breen and the world’s champion juvenile skater, Irene Dare. The latter displays her remarkable skill in a most daring and vivid manner in a picture which abounds with colourful scenes that the audience will appreciate. Nothing approaching the marvellous performance of this child actress has ever before been presented on the screen. Her skill and dash and positively superb gracefulness on the skates has charmed picture loving patrons wherever it has been shown. Crowded houses have made the box office receipts something in. the nature of a record. Add to this the magnificent singing and acting of Bobby Breen and there is presented an exceptionally outstanding picture. The story briefly is one of a youngster with a deep love for his widowed mother (Dolores Costello). Financial circumstances compel the pair to live with Bobby’s uncle. The mother wishes to return to the old farm and the man she loves, and Bobby, impressed with the necessity of helping her, leaves home with the idea of earning the required money. He links up with an itinerant junk and antique dealer (Charles Ruggles). Bobby gets menial work at an. ice rink, but on giving expression to his voice secures a singing engagement. Eventually the question of finance is straightened out and Bobby returns to the farm, and incidentally clears up the matter of a missing 20-dollar bill of which he had been accused of stealing. Mention of the picture would not be complete without reference to the splendid support given by other members of the cast. A splendid supporting programme includes a new gazette, a rather unusual group of submarine shots, and a Walt Disney cartoon. “SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS.” There will be a special treat for the children at the matinee at the State Theatre tomorrow afternoon when an amusing 15-minute playette featuring “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” will be staged by Miss Betty Coleman and her talented pupils.
