“One only wishes that the Bible was more read and had a more definite place in the hearts and lives of men and nations,” said Archbishop Averill at the ninety-second annual meeting of the Auckland Auxiliary of the British and Foreign Bible Society. “Men profess to be seeking for light to guide their feet in the way of peace in a world which seems in many ways to be growing darker,” he added. “The light has come and still shines, but too often the light is too searching and what they really want is some justification for their own self will.”
