MAORI GOES WILD

DISTURBANCE IN AUCKLAND. RAILWAY STATION. WOMEN IN BOOKSTALL ALARMED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, November 30. A lively disturbance was caused by a young Maori who ran amuck in the concourse of the Auckland railway station this evening. Large numbers of homeward-bound workers witnessed the incident, which lasted for about 10 minutes before the Maori was arrested. The Maori and a companion had been seated in the concourse for some time and suddenly the former began to cry out loudly and race aimlessly among the stream of people making their way to the suburban train platforms. Finally he jumped over the counter of the bookstall and terrified five young women who were engaged there at the time. One of the young women armed herself with a hammer and held the Maori at bay till two railway porters came to her assistance and took charge of the man. A struggle ensued and a civilian also lent some support in an attempt to subdue the Maori while the police were summoned.

In the meantime the Maori continued to struggle till he was pinned down near the entrances to the express platform. Beating his head on the concrete floor of the concourse, the man badly injured his face and was still acting violently and crying out when two constables arrived and arrested him.
