TENNIS SEASON. OFFICIAL OPENING. (“Times-Age” Special.) There was a large attendance at the official opening of the tennis season on Saturday, the weather being fine. A Yankee tournament was played, the results being as follows:—First round: Miss Gaudin and Hall (scr.) beat Mrs Tikao and Munro (owe 10); Thomas and C. Hume (owe 20) beat Herangi and Didsbury (owe 5); Miss Sutton and D. Sutherland (scr.) beat Mrs Thomas and N. Hume (scr.); Miss M. Lovegrove and T. Hume (scr.) beat Miss J. Lovegrove and Squires (rec. 5); Hall and Guthrie (scr.) beat Tikao and Lovegrove (scr.). Second round: C. Hume and Thomas beat Miss Sutton and D. Sutherland; Gaudin and G. Hall beat S. Hall and Guthrie; Miss Lovegrove and T. Hume a bye. Semi-final: Miss Lovegrove and T. Hume beat Thomas and Hume. Final: Miss Lovegrove and T. Hume beat Gaudin and Hall. Afternoon tea was dispensed by the ladies. Personal. The • death has occurred at Tologa Bay of Mr Niko Hemi, formerly a resident of this district. He was a brother of Ben (Featherston), Tua (Martinborough), and Mick Hemi (Greytown), Mrs Hunter (Martinborough) and Mrs Piripi (Pirinoa) are sisters. The deceased is survived by Ms wife and several children. The funeral took place at Tologa Bay. Mesdames R. Piripi and J. Hunter are visiting Tologa Bay. Mr Colin Didsbury, Wellington, was the guest of his uncle, Mr R. McDougall, for the weekend. Mrs Naomi Te Tau, who Was the guest of Mrs Carter for the weekend, has returned to Hastings. Messrs M. Carter, Marsh and L. Te Tau were visitors here at the weekend. A wedding of considerable interest among the Maori populace was celebrated at Martinborongh on Sunday, when Queenie, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs Watene (Watson), of Turanganui, Pirinoa, was married to Mr George Solomon, of North Auckland. The officiating clergymen were the Revs Moses and Manuhera, of the Ratana Church. Mr and Mrs Solomon will take up their residence at Martinborough. Renovation of Meeting Houses. Mr Ben Roberts, M.P., met several leaders of the Maori people at the weekend at Greytown and discussed with them matters with reference to the renovation of the Te Ore Ore and Papawai meeting houses. Good Fishing. A party from Featherston caught a large number of groper at Palliser Bay last weekend. It is reported that fishing is also good further up the coast. Cartage of Wool Clips. Lorries are very busy at the present time carting clips from the various stations. The weather is not very favourable for shearing. Intermittent showers have been experienced during tne past few days.
