That the youth of today is certainly not tied to the standards of yesterday in thought on political, international, social and educational subjects was apparent when four senior boys from the Southland Boys’ High School spoke at the weekly luncheon of the Invercargill Rotary Club. Each of the boys handled his subject with ability and in a manner which showed sympathy with advanced ideas. One speaker argued the case for reform of the educational system and advocated the encouragement of individual development with more emphasis on such subjects as philosophy. He denounced militarism in the schools and pointed out the absurdity of boys armed with rifles taking part in an Armistice Day service which was intended to commemorate peace. Mr S. M. Macalister, on behalf of the club thanked the boys and congratulated them on their speeches. At the same time he made several points of criticism regarding some of the ideas presented. Experience, he thought, would probably throw a new light on theories which now seemed very attractive.
