CARTERTON

CHURCH WORKERS HONOURED. MR AND MRS W. GAZE. ("Times-Age” Special.) The Sunday schoolroom at the Ingestre Street Baptist. Church, Wanganui, was crowded with well-wishers and friends who gathered at a social evening to farewell Mr* and Mrs W. C. Gaze, who have taken up their residence in Carterton., Miss Nelson, on behalf of the Deaconesses Court presented Mrs Gaze with a bouquet. The Rev Thomas Weston, for Wanganui East Baptists, spoke in eulogistic terms of the work done by Mr Gaze and thanked his daughter, Miss Alison Gaze, who .had been responsible for starting the Wanganui East Wolf Cubpack. , Mr A. F. Woollams spoke on behalf of the Scouts and Cubs. He said he had great appreciation for Mr and Mrs Gaze. Mr Gaze had not wasted any time, as he was in the movement already in Carterton, their new home. Mr Woollams then presented Mrs Gaze with a bouquet. Mr F. Pritchard, superintendent of the Sunday School, spoke on behalf of the young people of the church and the Sunday School, Mr Gaze having been superintendent of the latter for many years. Other speakers paid a tribute to the work done by Mr and Mrs Gaze and said that when he came to Wanganui 36 years ago, Mrs Gaze’s father, Mr Carson, was the superintendent. ! Mr Alex Holland, of Bulls, said that when he was a boy 42 years ago, Mr Gaze was the secretary and librarian of the Sunday School, and Mrs Gaze — then Miss Carson —had the infant class. Mrs George Fear, for the women of the congregation, then presented Mrs Gaze with a bouquet, and spoke for them. Mrs Horsley, on behalf of the Wanganui East 8.W.M.U.; bedecked Mrs Gaze with a garland of sweet williams and forget-me-nots, and Mr Gaze with a rose bud and forget-me-nots, as a buttonhole. Mr E. Nicholls then presented a brown handbag to Mrs Gaze, with pocket money inside for herself, and a suitcase to Mr Gaze, and the best New Zealand rug for them both. Mr and Mrs Gaze responded suitably. LABOUR PARTY. A “VICTORY” DANCE. A "victory” dance was held in the King’s Theatre on Monday evening, under the auspices of the Carterton Branch fo the Labour Party, Three hundred persons were present, and a very enjoyable time was spent in a qai"efree atmosphere. A filne programme was rendered by Te Tau’s Dance Band. Extras were played by H. Marrill and Dar Te Tau, and muchappreciated items were given by Miss Lock and her pupils. The winners in the competitions were: —Valeta spot, Mr B. Packman and Miss Nicholson; Monte Carlo waltz, Mr O. Daysh and Miss Z. Abbott; the “Adam” Monte Carlo by Mr Bouzaid and Miss O. Grandler. The duties of M.C. were carried out by Mr L. Uprichard, assisted by Mr R. O’Keefe. The sit-do'wn supper was in the hands of an energetic committee of ladies and men, the tables being decorated with red poppies. Macnara (black net over satin), J. Abbott (black velvet), Madge Green (white figured satin), Joyce Benge (floral organdi), E. Garrett (black velvet), B. Howie (blue taffeta), M. Hack (white satin), M. Larsen (violet crepe satin), J. Campbell (lemon taffeta), A. Bond (black marocain), B. Dick (pink, taffeta), B. Thompson (blue embossed crepe), Miss Lock (pink with black coat), B. Dwane (apricot ring satin), Nola Nichols (salmon taffeta), E. Potterill (floral taffeta), A.- Sadler (blue silk net), Mesdames S. Ewing (red satin), Lenihan (brown marocain), George (apple green lace), Jackson (black silk) and Bradbury (brown marocain). Cantata at Methodist Church. The Cantata “Shepherd of Men” was rendered by the choir at the Methodist Church on Sunday evening to a large and appreciative congregation. The Rev. White thanked the choir on behalf of the Church. Personal. Little Pamela Stubbs, who Has been a patient in the Masterton Hospital for the last two months, has now returned to her home in Rhodes Street. Mr R. Skipper, of Timaru. who has been staying with his brother-in-law during the past fortnight, left for Timaru yesterday. Mr Vic Robinson, of Wyndham Street, has found it necessary to enter Croydon Hospital suffering with a poisoned hand. Swimming Club. The general meeting of the Carterton Amateur Swimming Club was held in the Fire Brigade Hall on Monday evening. Mr L. Fairbrother was voted to the chair. Prior to the business reference was made to the death of the club's president, Mi' M. F. King, and as a mark of respect a vote of condolence was passed to his widow and family. The report and balance sheet showing a small credit balance was read and adopted.

Wakelin, E.McKenzie, L. Clark, J. Udy; club captain, Mr Rex Lawrence; secretary, Mr E. Wilkins, jun.; treasurer, Miss D. Crawley; hon auditor, Mr L. H. Sorensen; committee, Misses Grayndler. Taplin, E. Stubbs, H. Callender, Messrs F. Yule, Howall, A. Deller, I. Bond, S. Dwane, A. Pinfold, W. Crawley, G. Gill, J. Duffy, G. Brown; handicappers, Messrs E. Wilkins and L. Fairbrother; timekeepers, Messrs Wakelin and Worsfold; official starter, Mr H. Matson. It was resolved that subscriptions remain the same as last season.

The secretary was instructed to write to the Carterton Borough Council for the use of baths for evenings and Sunday afternoons, and it was left to the committee to arrange when the evening swims would commence.

Wandering Stock. A letter was received at last night’s meeting of the Carterton Borough Council concerning wandering cattle. The writer complained that cattle had got through his front gate and ruined his vegetable garden. It was decided that the person whose cattle were alleged to have been at large be written to informing him that they must be kept in his paddock and not allowed to wander on the roadside grazing. It was resolved that proceedings be taken against straying stock. Health Stamps. It was resolved at last night’s meeting of the Borough Council to purchase £2 of health stamps. Shop Day. The Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union and Pipe Band Committee combined were at last night’s meeting of the Borough Council given permission to hold a shop day in Carterton in December. Caretaker of Baths. At last night’s meeting of the Carterton Borough Council Mr H. J. Smith was appointed Caretaker to the Carterton swimming baths. The opening of the same was left to the Mayor and town clerk. Tennis Club Deputation. A deputation from the Carrington Park Tennis Club, consisting of Messrs C. Clark and A. R. Tankersley waited upon the Borough Council at last night’s meeting asking that the Council make additions to the present building on the park so as to allow of two dressing rooms, at a cost approximating £Bl. The deputation assured the council that it was prepared to advance £2O with the possibility of a further donation at the end of the season, and asked the Council to find th'<balance of £6l. The club would each year contribute towards the reduction of the money granted by the Council. The matter was dealt with after the deputation retired, and it was mentioned that at present the Council could do nothing to assist, but in February there may be a means to do so. In the meantime it was suggested th f at the tennis club co-operate with hockey and cricket clubs with a view to arranging an art union to raise the funds required. Vacant Section. The owner of the section upon which a building was removed opposite the Council Chambers, is tobe asked to clean up the section before Christmas. Assistant Clerk’s Salary. The question of increasing the salary of the assistant clerk to the Carterton Borough was considered at last night's meeting and an increase granted.
