PERSONAL TALKS

MR PIROW’S CONTINENTAL TOUR

NO AUTHORITY TO CONDUCT NEGOTIATIONS. MR MacDONALD CORRECTS MISAPPREHENSION. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day. 11.20 a.m.) RUGBY, November 29. Replying in the House of Commons to a question on the Continental tour of the South African Minister of Defence (Mr O. Pirow), Mr Malcolm MacDonald (Secretary for the Dominions) said: “I have no doubt that when Mr Pirow returns to this country he will give us information about these various conversations in Europe, but members are under some misapprehension. They seem to suppose that some negotiations are proceeding between Mr Pirow and Herr Hitler. As I said previously, I am not aware of any such negotiation having taken place.” Mr MacDonald pointed out that Mr Pirow’s talks were personal, not official on behalf of the Union Government.
