OBITUARY
MR JOHN WEEKES MANNELL. The death occurred this morning at the Masterton Hospital of Mr John Weckes Mannell, of Elizabeth Street, a well-known resident of Masterton, at the age of 67 years. The late Mr Mannell had not enjoyed the best of health for some time past and entered hospital last Friday. Born at Penzance, Cornwall, England, he came to New Zealand in 1901 and for a year or two worked in the Manawatu district, arriving in Masterton about 1904. He had resided here ever since and for many years had conducted a business on his own account. He married Miss Goggin, a daughter of an old Wairarapa family. He was a member of the Foresters’ Lodge. The late Mr Mannell is survived by a widow, two sons, Messrs John and Edward Mannell and one daughter, Miss Agnes Mannell, all of Masterton. Mr T. R. Mannell of Upper Plain, is a brother and Mrs E. B. Ash, of Wellington, is a sister, while there are four other sisters residing in England. The funeral will take place tomorrow, leaving St. Patrick’s Church at 2.30 p.m. for the Masterton Cemetery. MRS S. DAWSON. Mrs Mary Dawson, wife of Mr Samuel Dawson, of Opaki Road, Masterton, died yesterday at the age of 87 years. The late Mrs Dawson was born in Ulster, Ireland, and came to New Zealand fifty years ago. After her marriage in Wellington 46 years ago she took up her residence in Mauriceville, when the whole district was clothed in bush. The late Mrs Dawson is survived by a widower and one daughter, Mrs C. Cheetham, of Mauriceville, and three grandchildren. The only son was killed in the Great War. The funeral will take place tomorrow, leaving St. Matthew's Church after a service commencing at 2 p.m. for the Masterton Cemetery.
