OLD CEMETERY
RELICS OF MIDDLE AGES. Seventy-two tombs, almost all intact, dating from the Middle Ages have been discovered at Haut-de-Tomboux. close to the left bank of the Moselle' 11 miles from Nancy. Fifteen glass vases have been found in the tombs, somedating from the fifth century. The antiquity of these vases has been established beyond doubt by modern methods enabling the composition of the different glasses to be discerned. The examination was carried out at the laboratory of spectrography ol the Institut d’Optique of Paris, and this was the first time that the methods of optical analysis had been applied to antique objects. The glassware was made in the region in which the vessels were discovered but with materials importec from the East, purchased it is believed of merchants from the East, who were numerous in Gaul. The glass vessels found were blown in the same mannei as is employed today. The discovery of the ancient tombs which contained these and other objects was made during quarry excavations.
