At the monthly meeting of the Eketahuna branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, Mr Priest entertained those present with a lecture on the Shetland Islands, showing a number of very interesting lantern slides. Mr Priest’s address was much appreciated and provided those present with information of a most valuable character. In the course of his address Mr Priest said that the Shetland Islands were given as a dowry with Margaret, Maid of Norway, to the Scottish throne when she was married to King James 111 of Scotland. The Shetland Islanders were not happy under James’s rule and wished themselves back under the peaceful reign of . King Kristian of Norway. All the old place names are Scandinavian and food in the islands was mostly of Scandinavian origin with dishes such as fish, potatoes, sour milk, cod livers, vegetables and oatmeal. People thrived well on this food. Tuberculosis was unknown, but it is prevalent now since different food has been introduced. Sheep are not shorn in the islands. The wool is pulled from the sheeps’ backs; this is because of the fine knitting the people are noted for; they find the ends are not so . sharp as when the wool is shorn. Mr Priest was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his address.
