PRICE OF GOLD
SHARP RISE IN LONDON. FOLLOWING ON DECLINE IN STERLING. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received This Day, 9.45 a.m.) LONDON, November 22. The price of gold in London today is £7 8s» 9d an ounce (as compared with £7 7s ii-id on Monday). Exchanges: New York, 4.671 dollars: Paris, 178 11-16 francs; Batavia. 8.57 a florins. Antwerp futures are steady. Quotations: December 22 7-Bd, March 23 3-Bd, May 23 5-Bd. The gold price was affected by a sharp fall in sterling, due to a strong demand for dollars, owing to the uncertainty of the international situation, including the reported recalling of the German Ambassador to London, Dr Von Dirksen, and the tension existing between America and Germany. The dollar rose to 4.67 3-8, the highest sterling value since 1933, except on September 28, before Mr Neville Chamberlain’s announcement that he intended visiting Herr Hitler. The dollar later became steady. There are no signs of British exchange control operating. The stock markets are dull.
