4 BURGLARY AT HAMUA. SUM OF £6 STOLEN. (“Times-Age” Special.) Early on Thursday morning a house owned by Mr M. Galvin, situated on the main road to Masterton, at Hamua, was entered while the occupants were away milking.- The house was thoroughly ransacked and the thieves got away with a sum totalling approximately £6. Two children were asleep in the house while the burglar was there but they did not awaken. The police at Eketahuna are handling the case. Named After Maori Chief. It’ may not be generally known that Hamua was named after a noted Maori chief. Tararua Power Board. At the monthly meeting of the Tararua Power Board the engineer, Mr D. Fraser, reported as follows on the Eketahuna area:—-During the shutdown on .the 16th some urgent work on h.t. lines between Parkville and Mauriceville was carried out. A bank of 150 k.v.a. transformers was installed in the town sub-station to replace the existing 100 k.v.a. transformers, which will be installed at Parkville to supply the dairy factory and the new Government houses. Defective service poles were replaced at Mr Dillon’s, Newman, and also a defective h.t. pole at Hastwells. The Kelman switch at Rongomai, controlling the Alfredton feeders, opened and was closed without delay. This fault was not located. No. 7/14 and No. 8 copper wire has been dismantled where the 11 k.v. lines were deviated along the clay road between Parkville and the north road. Tree-trimming and the renewal of section and service fuses is being attended to as opportunity permits. • The following report was submitted by. the managing-secretary, Mr W. F. Taylor:—Many inquiries continue to come in, in respect of residential appliances. Alterations and additions to equipment in cow-sheds provide work for our staff and the contractors. No developments take place on the commercial side of our ability to serve. Credit sales on trading account show an increase. The total for October was £823 10s lOd. The total cash from all sources amounted to £3017 18s lOd. Of the four shops on the Main Street, Eketahuna, only one is occupied. Miss O’Donnell’s tenancy expired on November 5. The total rental from the property is 10s per week. Fireman Honoured. A social was tendered to Station-Of-ficer J. H. Ryan on the occasion of his having served for 25 years as a fireman when the opportunity was taken to present him with the United Fire Brigades’ Association’s Gold Star. The large and representative attendance, included Mr Ben Roberts, M.P., for Wairarapa, firemen from Featherston, Carterton, Woodville and Pahiatua fire brigades. A number of toasts were honoured, and the presentation of a gold star was made to Station-Officer Ryan by Mr Ben Roberts, M.P. Mr Roberts congratulated the recipient on a wonderful record and praised his steadfastness of purpose to gain the coveted star. To be a fireman one had to have courage and he was pleased to think that there were men willing to risk their all for the sake of their • fellowmen in time of trouble. The following also extended their congratulations to Mr Ryan: Messrs J. Renment, J. S. Tripe, R. Dickson, Deputy-Supt. Boston, of Featherston, Supt. Rogers, De-puty-Supt. ■H. Daniel, FiremenG. Oldham, Noel Mason, Liardet, B. Dinnan, W. Hooper. | CRICKET CHAMPIONSHIP. WIN FOR EKETAHUNA. ■ • On Saturday at Eketahuna the local team defeated the Pahiatua Fire Brigade by an innings and 51 runs. The scores were as follow: —Eketahuna, first innings, 124 (F. Robinson, retired. 50, J. Payne 26, G. Higginson, retired, 21). Watt was the most successful bowler for the Fire Brigade, taking 3 wickets. Pahiatua, Fire Brigade, first innings, 54 (S. Kershaw, not out 21; J. Payne took 4 wickets and P. Payne 3 wickets); second innings, 19 (J. Payne 7 wickets for 7 runs, including the hat trick, P. Payne 3 for 7). In a competition match on Saturday Pahiatua beat Mangamaire. A friendly match was played at Eketahuna yesterday between the Rongomai and Eketahuna teams, the former winning on the first innings. Scores:. Eketahuna. first innings, 53; second innings 91 (Fredericksen 30, McGregor 21). Rongomai, first innings, 82; second innings, 49 for 5.
