CARTERTON
SCOUT GATHERING. SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. (“Times-Age” Special.) A very successful function was held in the Foresters’ Hall, Carterton, on Saturday night in aid of the First Carterton Scout Troop. The early part of fhe evening was spent in playing euchre, the prizes being won by Mrs Finn (ladies) and Mr F. O’Keefe (men). The latter handed back his prize for a future occasion. Consolation prizes were won by Mrs G. Kiddie and Mr P. Hodder. After the euchre tournament, supper was served, following which Miss L. Moody was announced the winner of the cake competition. District. Commissioner N. C. C. Shepherd, of Featherston, presented Scoutmaster D. Barclay with his Scoutmaster’s Warrant, and also handed a trophy to Scout J. O’Keefe for having been the most energetic scout among the boys who were helping the Wairarapa A. and P. Association at the Carterton Show. Mr Shepherd stressed the importance of the Boy Scout Movement and urged parents to take a keen interest in this excellent cause. Mr Shepherd, before concluding a very interesting address, congratulated Miss J. Edge on' the manner in which she had carried out her duties with the Cubs. Then the Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmasters took charge of the boys, who rendered several much appreciated items. Scout C. Bird gave a splendid mouth organ solo. Camp fire songs were rendered by the Troop, and finally two songs by Troop Leader Bas. Walsh were given, for which he received hearty recalls. A very pleasant function was brought to a close with several interesting games conducted by Mr Clark, of the Featherston Troop, and by the singing of Auld Lang Sync, and the National Anthem. The accompqniifrent being played by Mrs Finn. Votes of thanks carried by acclamation were passed to Mr A. F. Pink for kindly donating the use of the hall and also the M.U.1.0.0.F. Lodge, for the use of crockery and cards. TRAP SHOOTING. CARTERTON CLUB GATHERING. There was a large /gathering of shooters at the Carterton Club grounds, Clareville Racecourse, at the weekend and some very excellent shooting was witnessed by a large gallery of onlookers. The first match was for Mr D. McKenzie’s trophy, combined with it being a 15-bird sweepstake. The trophy was won by L. Lyddington (14yds.) who shot off with R. Wai- 1 ker (11yds.). The sweepstake fired in conjunction with the trophy was won by D. Fenwick (14yds.), of the Pirinpa Club, who shot a possible number of birds, eleven with the first barrell and four with the second. G. Bretherton (19yds.), of the Taumaranui Club, was second with 14 kills, all with the first barrel, missing his second to last shot. R. Walker (Uyds.) was third with 13 kills. A second swepestake (15 birds) was fired, and resulted in a tie between N. Prussing (Martinborough) 16yds., R. Fenwick (Pirinoa) 16yds., R. Williams (Carterton) 13yds„ and R. Walker (Carterton) 11yds., with 14 kills each. They decided to shoot off. Prussing and Walker dropped out after 3 and four shots, respectively, leaving Fenwick and Williams who tied after 7 shots each had been fired. They then decided to divide the sweep money. FIRE BRIGADE COMPETITIONS. LIST OF WINNERS. The competitions held by the Carterton Volunteer Fire Brigade members were concluded on Saturday afternoon after a series of practices during the past ■ three weeks. Keen competition was evinced throughout and the results of the various contests were as follow: Taucher Cup, for competition between junior members, set standpipe, break two couplings, tvzo further couplings at 50ft of hose and finally connect two branches at 200 ft of hose: Archie Clark, 61sec 1; B. The first matches in the Chib’s champion rink games were played on Saturday in beautiful weather. The green played well and some very interesting and close contests resulted. Afternoon tea was provided by Mrs C. L. Callender assisted by Mrs A. T. Murray and was enjoyed by all present. The following are results of games played: Callander, Underhill. G. Hart. Friendly games: Saville, Meyrick, Bain (s) beat Bath, Hawker, Harp (s), 30 to 18;-Beaven, Chatwin (s) beat Dudson, Cronin (s), 26 to 16. Club handicap pairs: The first game in the Club handicap pairs was played as under: G. Steven, De Lacey (s) beat’Newbould, Hughan (s), 26 to 13. Tomorrow evening (weather permitting) an electric light tourney will be held on the Martinborough bowling green. It is anticipated all clubs in the Wairarapa will be represented. TENNIS. METHODIST CLUBS MEET. A match was played on Saturday between the Carterton and Greytown Methodist Clubs on the latter club’s courts. Most of the games were keenly fought, the result being in favour of Carterton by 18 sets and 118 games to 4 sets, 83 games.. Afternoon tea was provided and the games were, played in the most friendly spirit. A return match is likely to be played at Carterton early in the New Year. Sale of Stud Stock. Messrs Martin Parker and K. G. Fairbrother, of Dalefield, breeders of high-class Holstein stock, recently disposed of a 2-year-old bull each. The animals were both shipped to clients in the Falkland Islands. Personal. Mr D. Vaughan, son of Mr W. Vaughan, of Carterton, left Carterton this morning for Wanganui. Stamp Vending Machine. Very shortly another stamp vending machine will be placed in the posting lobby of the Carterton Post Office. The machine will be for the vending of half-penny stamps in conjunction with the penny one already in use. and will be of great convenience to the public.
