MEETING OF WAIRARAPA | SOCIETY STANDARD OF LIVE STOCK HIGH. GOOD WORK OF SECRETARY. (“Times-Age” Special.) The president, Mr J. Fisher, occupied the chair at the monthly meeting of the Wairarapa P. and A. Society, held at Carterton today. There was a large attendance of members. Votes of condolence were passed with the relatives of the late Hon. A. D. McLeod, Messrs Q. Donald, W. J. Feast, E. Fairbrother and Mrs C. L. Reynolds. Mr Fisher said the late Mr McLeod was one of the best known men in the Wairarapa. He did a wonderful amount of work for the district and perhaps if he had not done so much he might not have been such a sick man in recent years. Mr McLeod was a member of the committee of the society for many years. The late Mr Donald was a past president of the so- ■ ciety and like Mr McLeod did a great deal of work for other people. Reporting on the financial position, the treasurer, Mr G. Brown, said the statement indicated that practically the whole of the finances of the society were concentrated on the month of October. The society was dependent on two days of the year for success or failure from a financial viewpoint. Mr Brown reported a credit balance of £1771 5s 4d. Receipts since last meeting amounted to £1963 7s 9d. Accounts amounting to £1137 Ils 6c were passed, including Show prizemoney totalling £BO7 12s 6d. Votes of thanks were passed to members who carried out the canvass, Mr J. Wallace for work at the Showgrounds and Mr G. Hart, chairman of the ground committee. Referring to a letter of thanks, the secretary, Mr L. H. Smart said: “It is not generally known that once a man judges at our Show he receives free tickets for the rest of his life.” Thanks were expressed to a number of judges who returned their expense money. An anonymous donor forwarded a cheque for £2 in appreciation of the action of the society in forwarding him complimentary tickets for the Show. “As far as the standard of its live stock is concerned,” stated Mr Smart, “the Wairarapa can be proud of the Shows it, holds. In my opinion, if we received the outside support that local breeders give to other shows we, Carterton and Masterton, could stage Shows that would easily lead the North Island.” Reference was made by several members to the excellent work done at Show time by Mr Smart, Mr Hart remarking: “What puzzles me is not what he does but the few things he leaves undone.” The Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural clubs were granted the free use of the Showgrounds on December 13 for the annual calf judging competition. Fifteen new members were elected.
