The Governor-General, Lord Galway, and Lady Galway, made their first official visit to Hokitika yesterday. A civic welcome was extended by the mayor. The large assemblage included 500 school children, Girl Guides, and Boy Scouts. Returned soldiers provided a guard of honour. In the afternoon his Excellency opened the Williams Children’s Ward at the Westland Hospital. He was presented with -a gold key. He also visited the Rimu and Kanieri dredges. Today he will visit the South Westland glaciers.
An Auckland visitor to Masterton is Mr. Ashley Williams. Mr Ivan Jackson, judge for the horse section at the Kirwee-Courtenay Show left for Christchurch last night.
Colonel Burton, of the Salvation Army, will pay a visit to Masterton at the week-end, and will conduct special services on Sunday. The Colonel will be accompanied by the Misses Kirk and Hawker, well-known to radio listeners as the S'weet Gospel Singers." The Rev Solomon Katz Rabbi of Wellington, will leave for Auckland on Monday to catch the Awatea for Sydney, whence he will sail for Paris and London. He will return via the United States of America. He will meet Mrs Katz and his eldest son in Paris, and his youngest son in New York. He will be away lour months. Rabbi Katz will be the guest of the Jewish community of Wellington tomorrow afternoon at a farewell gathering in the ladies' club rooms. At last night’s meeting of the Masterton A. and P. Association votes of condolence were passed with Mesdames Q. Donald, J. B. Henry, J. Walker in the loss of their husbands, Mr C. L. Reynolds in the loss of his wife, and Mr F. E. Jansen in the loss of a child. The late Mr Donald was a life member and a former president of the association. He took a very keen interest in the Show and supported it right up to the time of his death. The late Mr Henry was a former treasurer of the association.
