STAPLE FIBRE
NOTED AUSTRALIAN’S VIEW. COMPETITION IN THE FUTURE. “It is nonsense to assume that staple fibre does not compete with wool,” said Sir Dalziel Kelly, chairman of the Australian Wool Board, on his return recently from a tour of Continental countries in the interests of Australian woolgrowers. “It is still more dangerous nonsense to assume that it will not become an even more dangerous competitor in the future, especially in the totalitarian States, where intense nationalism and difficulties of international exchange are giving, and will continue to give artificial fibre an advantage over wool. “It is surely not without significance that since the war consumption of silk and cotton per head of population in the United States has remained almost constant, while that of wool has largely decreased with the rapid growth in the consumption of artificial fibre.
“As a result of the knowledge gained on this trip, I am more than ever convinced as to the absolute necessity for woolgrowers to pursue a vigorous policy of publicity and research,” Sir Dalziel Kelly added.
