CARTERTON

WOMEN’S DIVISION. SHOW OF SHRUBS AND FLOWERS. ("Times-Age” Special.) At the monthly meeting of the Women's Division of the Farmers’ Union Mrs Standen (vice-president) presided. A motion of sympathy was passed with the family of the late Mrs C. Reynolds, who had been a valued member for some years. Members stood in silence as a mark of respect. There was a very good display of shrubs and flowers for the monthly competition. In the shrub section, Miss P. Renall was first with an apple blossom. Mrs E. Allen (broom), was second. Mrs G. Cooper was first in the flower section with a stock, and Mrs A. Stretton second with a rose. It was decided to hold a social evening on November 18, when the Drama / Circle will present items and sketches. The hostesses were Mrs Standen and Miss M. Wilson. A meeting of ladies interested in the Women’s'Division was held in Carterton yesterday. The purpose was a proposal to help the pipe band and the establishment of a ladies’ rest room in Carterton. It was decided that a .shop day be held on Friday, December 9. It is hoped gifts of produce, cakes, etc., will be forthcoming in abundance to assist both objects. Personal. Mrs A. Ingley, of Carterton, received an urgent message from Auckland that her mother was seriously ill. Mrs Ingley left yesterday for Palmerston North, where she met Mrs Conder and Mr W. Burns, of Wellington, and joined them in a passage to Auckland by the Union Airways’ plane. The sad news was received in Carterton today that Mrs Ingley’s mother had died this morning. She was 91 years of age. Among other relatives she leaves four grandchildren and one great grandchild. Mr Ira J. Bridger, Director-General of the Nev; Zealand Red Cross Society, was for thirteen years Mayor of Eltham. Swimming Baths. Considerable improvements are being carried out at the Carterton swimming baths and the efforts of the Baths Committee of the Borough Council will be fully appreciated by swimmers; more particularly will this be the case in regard to the women’s quarters. After the improvements are completed the baths will be filled from the high pressure water supply, and should be 1 open to the public shortly. The Wool Season. There continues to be large consignments of wool forwarded from the Carterton railway station to Wellington wool stores. Fat Lambs. Yesterday lorries were busy transporting fat lambs to the railway station. These were railed to the Wellington freezing works. Sheep and pigs were also sent to Wellington by rail. Pipe Band Social. There was a good attendance at the Pipe Band social held in the Band Room last evening, and a pleasant time was spent by those present. Various items were rendered including Scotch dances, etc. The funds of the Pipe Band should be substantially increased as a result. Ladies’ Rest Room. It is understood that the section of land between the Plunket rooms and Mr Deller’s property has been purchased for the purpose of erecting a ladies’ rest room in Carterton. Red Cross. The public meeting called by the Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, for the purpose of forming a branch of the Red Cross Society in Carterton last evening was very poorly attended. Mr Ira J. Bridger, Director-General of the New Zealand Red Cross Society was present. Owing to the poor attendance the Director decided not to address those present, but several volunteered to take membership cards and circulars for the purpose of securing members. Mr Bridger will visit Carterton in February next to deliver an address on the Red Cross Society. It was incidentally mentioned that at the moment there are 2,000,000 junior members in all parts of the world who write to each other and give and receive all kinds of beneficial information regarding the workings of the Red Cross Society. Among those who volunteered to secure members were Mrs A. W. Beale. Miss O. W. Wolters, and Messrs P. A. Cole and R. J. Tretheway. RETURNED SOLDIERS. CARTERTON BRANCH MEET. At the monthly meeting of the Carterton Branch of the Returned Soldiers Association there were present: Messrs A. T. Murray (chairman), C. A. Chennells, L. J. Harding, C. Manley. H. Rathbone, F. Taplin and D. G. Johnston (Secretary). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs C. C. Callender and G. Rabbits. Accounts amounting to £2 7s lid were passed for payment. The secretary reported on the recent dance held at Dalefield, which showed a credit balance of £4 3s 6d. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the Dalefield ladies and all who helped to make the function a success. The visit of the Australian contingent to New Zealand in 1940 was discussed at length, and in response to a letter received it was decided to inform the Wairarapa Executive that the Carterton branch would be prepared to entertain 50 visiting Australians for one day. Further arrangements were left to another meeting. An application from a member for a loan of £lO was referred to the tustees with a recommendation that the loan be granted.
