ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY

APPOINTMENT OF CONDUCTOR. SUB-COMMITTEE TO REPORT. Mr A. Clemas, president, presided over a well-attended meeting of the Masterton Orchestral Society last evening to consider the question of a successor to tne late Mr J. Candy and the position of the society in general. Mr Clemas made reference to the loss the society and the town had suffered through the death of their late conductor and as a mark of respect the meeting passed a motion of condolence with the relatives, the motion being carried in silence. The position of conductor was fully discussed and a sub-committee was appointed to go further into the matter and report to the executive at an early date. The enthusiasm of the meeting augurs well for the future success of the orchestra and Masterton is to be congratulated on having such a live body, the members of which are willing to devote much of their time in the interests of good music and in providing an orchestra worthy of the town. The Orchestra fills an important part in the town’s cultural amenities, »—. and is the means of expression of the community’s task for good music, which encourages its study by a greater number of the younger generation. An easy way to help the society to give still better service is to become an honorary member. The annual subscription is only 10s 6d, which entitles the member to two tickets for each of two concerts, with priority in booking rights. If it were assured of a larger income the society would be able to introduce noted instrumental and vocal soloists from the larger centres or abroad to add interest and make concerts more attractive. For the convenience of members subscriptions may be paid at the Arts and Crafts, Queen Street, and those members who have not already done so would considerably helo by giving the matter their early attention.
