CARTERTON

CARTERTON LABOUR PARTY. SUCCESSFUL DANCE. ("Times-Age” Special.) The weekly dance, under the auspices of the Carterton Labour Party’s social committee, which was held in the Band Hall on Saturday evening, was well attended. The music was supplied by Mr D. Te Tau and Sam Te Tau. Extras were played by Miss Lorenzen and Mr J. Blake. The Monte Carlo dance was won by Mr Stan Green, sen. and Mrs Goodacre. Miss Williams gave considerable pleasure by her tap dancing. The efficient way in which the supper was arranged was due to the energetic committee of ladies.

ODD FELLOWS’ LODGE FORTNIGHTLY MEETING The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge last evening was presided over by Bro W. J. Wilkins, N.G. There was a fair attendance of members. A letter of recommendation was ordered to be sent to a member now resident of Lower Hutt. Sick pay amounting to £9 was passed for payment, and also other accounts amounting to £l6 including a maternity claim. An invitation from the Loyal Combination Lodge, Johnsonville, for members to be present at a ’Xmas social and dance on Saturday, December 17 was received. One member was declared off the sick fund of the lodge. Correspondence was received from the District Secretary enclosing the result of the Lodges’ Quinquennial valuation which amounts to £1854 as against £1437 at the previous valuation. The Government Actuary in his attached report congratulated the lodge on the sound position disclosed by the valuation. P.G. Bro G. S. Bruce, president of the P.G.’s Lodge, reported in regard to the meeting at Greytown addressed by the Grand Secretary, Bro A. G. Shrimpton, on the Social Security Act, and was accorded a vote of thanks. It was resolved to grant the use of lodge crockery and playing cards to the Boy Scouts for their social evening on Saturday next. The following officers were nominated and the election will be held next lodge night:—N.G., Bro. A. R. Tankersley; V.G. Bros G. McPherson ! and C. C. Deller; E.S., Bro H. H. L. Mejrick; Warden, Sisters Eagle and Mellish, and Bros C. E. White and C. C. Deller; L.M. Bros White and Bruce. Carterton Tennis Club.

The Carterton Club’s courts were filled on Saturday. At the afternoon tea adjournment, the president, Mr R. W. Roydhouse, on behalf of the members, made a presentation to Mr J. Steel, who has acted as green committee of the club for many .years past. “The members, said Mr Roydhouse, “feel that such good and willing work should not go unrecognised, and between them have purchased a very handsome cut crystal electric.reading lamp, which the President had pleasure in handing tc Mr Steel as a mark of their esteem of himself and appreciation of his good work. Mr Steel, thanked members one and all for their kindly thought. The work he had done was nothing much, and was a pleasure to him. He very much appreciated the present, and the spirit in which it was given. The first official match for the Roydhouse Doubles Buttons was then played, the holders, L. D. Keedwell and D. L. Taverner, defending them against the'challenge of M. W. Worsfold and E. Dyer. The first set was very keenly contested and went to 6-5 in favour of the holders. The ."Ballengers took the next set 6-4, but thc-n lapsed badly, the holders winning the final set 6-1. It is understood that a challenge has been received from the Masterton Club, P. Hawksworth and Dr O’Connor, and the game will be played on the Carterton Courts on Wednesday next. The first matches of the present season take place on Saturday next, the Carterton Club meeting Memorial at Masterton in the “A” Grade, Memorial at Carterton in the “B” Grade, and Martinborough at Martinborough in the % “C" Grade. A challenge game was played for the Combined Doubles Buttons, the holders, C. K. Goodin and Miss M. Smart, defeating the challengers, L. D. Keedwell and Miss Beaven, 6-4. Two games were played for the Men’s Double Buttons, the holders E. Dyer and R. Goodwin defeating C. K. Goodin and D. Taylor 6-1, but losing to M. W. Worsfold and I. Bond, 7-9. Young Farmers. Twenty-five members of the South Canterbury Young Farmers Clubs were in Carterton yesterday. They arrived by N.Z.R. bus continuing a tour of New Zealand. The party are in charge of Mr N. Lamont, of Masterton, while they are in Wairarapa, and were welcomed by three members of the Carterton Club. Messrs P. Swinn, S. Fisher and C. Bliss. They visited Sir William Perry’s property at Penrose and Mr Roland Perry’s farm at Masterton, and were entertained at lunch by the Carterton Young Farmers’ Club, and later visited the “Middle Run” property of Mr W. Henry Booth. The visitors were loud in their praise of the hospitality they received, the country they had seen and more particularly the excellent stock. Personal. Mr James Hanah, of Carterton, who has been laid aside . with sickness for time past, is about again, and his many friends will wish for him a speedy recovery to good health. S.M. Court. A sitting of the Carterton Magistrates’ Court will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. P. & h. Society. The monthly meeting of the general committee of the Wairarapa P. and A. Society is called for Saturday next at 10.20 a.m. The business will include the receiving of the report of the 1938

show, and any suggestions for the improvement of the 1939 exhibition. Good Catch of Fish. During the weekend Mr W. Spooner and his boys spent the weekend on the Castlepoint coast fishing. They went out on Saturday and so successful were they that it took the boys well into the early hours of Sunday morning carrying their catch two miles from the beach to their car. The catch included two large groper, sixty-three blue cod and one hundred and sixty crayfish. Most of the fish were sold to fish dealers and to private families. Car Accident. While driving his car along the Kokotau road yesterday afternoon, Mr G. Clark of Augustus Street, Carterton, met with on accident when in the vicinity of the river. One of the front wheels gave way with the consequence that the car left the road, turned completely over with all four wheels uppermost. As the car was turning over Mr Clark with great presence of mind opened the door and jumped clear. The windscreen was completely wrecked, and the iron framework badly twisted. The hood of the car was also damaged. The only mishap sustained by Mr Clark was that he had a hole burnt in his shirt by the escape of acid from the battery. The disabled car was later brought in for repairs. It is understood the car was not covered by insurance. Boy Scouts. A Scout social is to be held in the Foresters’ Hall on Saturday night, and a meeting will be held in Hadley’s Scout Hall on Thursday to make final, arrangements in connection therewith.
